What Everyone Should Know About Salt

Posted by on

Prepare to know more than you ever expected to know about salt. As an important part of most civilizations this element connects us to earth and even ourselves. The words ‘salary,’ ‘salad,’ ‘sauce,’ and ‘sausage,’ come from the word salt. It is one of the most naturally occurring and readily available substances on the planet and it has MAJOR healing qualities. Most people would walk into our store and see our bins of carefully curated salts from around the world and raise an eyebrow but not if they knew how healing this element is (it is also an edible crystal). Did you know salt helps speed up the wound healing process? Did you know it’s used to help you sleep better as well? That’s not all, it lowers stress and helps reduce headaches. For ages, athletes have been using it to reduce soreness in the muscles but few people know that it can also be used to reduce respiratory illnesses too.

Salt helps your skin with problems such as acne, eczema or psoriasis as well. It is touted for helping with mineral and nutrient absorption too. While many people are looking to reduce sodium content in food, this alternate use of a natural element is begging for your experimentation. Healers use salt baths all the time to clear their energy field. If you’re feeling heavy, foggy or just drained, a salt bath is a great option. You should bring a lot of water into the bathroom with you to drink while you’re taking the bath. The salt makes you sweat and you’ll have to re-hydrate.

Salt has a rich history. It was used in Africa as money and has been a very important part of world history tracing as far back as 6050 B.C. The Egyptians used salt as an offering to the gods and making salt is depicted in their ancient art.  Many cultures have placed great importance on this mineral. It’s been a part of religious practices and represents purity. This is where the term, ‘salt of the earth’ comes from too. Greek and Jewish religion include salt in rituals. Interestingly, the painting of the last supper shows spilled salt in front of Judas and the root word ‘sal’ is in the word salvation. Even babies usually had salt placed on their lip in baptism. Why were the disciples of Jesus called ‘The Salt of The Earth?’

Well what does sodium chloride do to your body? Well we know that it was used on battlefields to heal wounds and people feel it brings back luck when it’s spilled. In a psychological sense as a world civilization it means a lot. Salt follows the rise and fall of nations, battles and monopolization. Dark and light. Slaves and taxes. To many it represents purity while to others it represents power. It is used in Buddhism as well as in the Hopi and other Native American traditions. Some cultures worshiped it.

But really what is the big deal about salt? Roman soldiers received part of their pay in salt and it flavors food and preserves meat but on the flip side it can increase blood pressure. Look deeper though. It is found naturally occurring in our bodies and in the oceans. It is the quintessential embodiment of a metaphysical and physical healing mineral. It helps ward off negativity while healing the body if used topically. When it preserves food, it literally stops the decay process, interesting right?

There are many types of salt used to ward off psychic attacks and used in bowls, rituals and as protective barriers. Personally I found it helps me emotionally to take a salt bath once per week. The history of salt is extensive and vast as are the varieties, textures and costs. However you choose to interact with this substance is up to you but know that it can help you in many spiritual and physical ways. If you’re empathic, sensitive or feel drained easily by being around people, a salt bath regiment is highly recommended. Check out our salt on our website or in our stores.
