We are entering the last week of September and the winds of change begin to blow. On Sunday, September 22nd at 5:44 p.m., the Sun enters Libra, putting the focus on our relationships. This year, the Fall begins during eclipse season, meaning it will be a time of deep transformation.
This shift from Virgo to Libra also heralds the Fall Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. For mystics and pagans, this shift in nature has been celebrated as Mabon, a time of showing gratitude to nature, as the Fall is a time of harvesting. Interestingly, over the next few days, the Sun will be activating a nature goddess who, mythologically, is the reason why there are seasons on Earth.
Ceres, the Goddess of Agriculture, becomes our way of invoking guidance and blessings as we welcome the second part of the astrological year: Fall and Winter. As the archetype of the Celestial Mother, Ceres accompanies us in making the right choices for ourselves in the season ahead. To invoke this goddess's guidance, gather nature’s items and perform the ritual below:
A Mabon Ritual to Invoke Goddess Ceres
You will need a grain of your choice, a nut of your choice, a spice of your choice, a mortar and pestle, a green candle, and Palo Santo.
After gathering your items, light the green candle and close your eyes to enter a meditative state. Visualize the energy of the goddess Ceres appearing in your kitchen in the form of a green light, hovering over your items as a blessing. With your eyes still closed, connect with her energy as the goddess who, mythologically, is the reason for you having food on your table.
Offer a moment of gratitude, ask Ceres to bless your ritual with the following mantra: “Goddess Ceres, ruler of the seasons, I invoke you to accompany my harvest in the season ahead. With the green candle’s flame, light your Palo Santo and begin cleansing the grain, nut, and spice as you repeat the mantra, “to bring purity to the season ahead.”
Next, mix the items in the mortar and pestle (add water if necessary) until you get a paste. Bring your paste and your candle to your garden or closest park and after, once again, invoking Ceres as you earlier did, bury the paste in the Earth as an offering in exchange for her guidance in the season ahead.
