Love Magic: How to Cast a Sweetening Spell

Honey Jars are a common love spell used in folk magic traditions from around the world, especially in hoodoo practice. Sweetener spells have been used for centuries across a variety of cultures using different ingredients, containers and rituals, but they all share an essential structure.

The purpose of a Honey Jar spell is to sweeten someone’s feelings towards you. The spell can be used romantically—say, to attract your crush closer to you—but it’s not limited to that kind of love. If you’ve fallen out of favor with your boss, a sweetener spell could get you back on their radar. In fact, Honey Jar spells are a very effective form of defensive magic when anyone is conjuring anger or resentment toward you, since the spell can soften negative feelings and turn enemies into friends.

If someone nasty has been vexing you lately—a jealous coworker, an angry ex, or even your in-laws—a Honey Jar spell might just do the trick.

1. Choose a container

There are many methods to choosing a container. Most contemporary practitioners will use a small mason jar or something similar, usually with a proper lid. Although, some prefer the alternative Sugar Bowl spell, which just calls for a simple bowl and swaps the honey with sugar. If working with honey or maple syrup and the like, it’s best to avoid open containers as they may attract ants.

You can also go all-natural by coring an apple and using that as your container. But you probably won’t be able to leave it out for very long. If you opt for the apple method, try burying it after your spell is cast.

2. Create a totem

Whoever you’re casting your spell for, you’ll need to create a totem of that person. A picture works best, but in a pinch, you can make a simple petition paper: just write their full name an odd number of times, at least three and not more than nine usually works well, and then rotate the page 90 degrees clockwise and write your full name over theirs the same number of times. You can combine the two and write a petition paper on the picture.

3. Prepare the jar

Take your picture or petition paper, roll it up, and stick it in the container. Fill the jar or hollow apple with honey and close it. For the Sugar Bowl spell, you can fold the paper and place it in the bowl before filling the bowl with sugar.

4. Cast your spell

Ideally, you’ll have chosen an appropriate time for your spell. In a pinch, you can always perform magic at your own convenience, but it helps to align your workings with the planets. Full Moons (especially in sweet & graceful Libra) are the best time to cast this spell, with New Moons a close second. Enlist the aid of Venus—so charming and disarming—by casting your spell when she’s visible in the sky, just before dawn as the morningstar and just after dusk as the eveningstar.

Create a sacred circle by honoring the Four Directions and invite your guides, guardians and allies to join you.

Light a candle atop the Honey Jar or prop it up inside the Sugar Bowl or the hollow apple. Pink or white candles work best. Meditate upon the candle flame, visualizing your intended target sweetening their attitude toward you. Imagine how such a situation could manifest and how wonderful that outcome would feel and really revel in it for a moment. The longer you focus your attention on the candle flame with your magical intent in mind and your desired emotion in your heart, the more the fire will charge with your energy.

Complete your ceremony and let the candle burn out on its own, allowing the melting wax to seal the container. Set the jar on your altar for at least seven days, ideally meditating and praying on the jar at the same time each of those days. If you opted for the apple method, you’re better off foregoing the seven days on the altar for a quick burial instead. You can and should still return to the burial sight over the next seven days. Remember, the more concentrated attention you give the spell, the more energy it will have to do manifest your will.

***

Traditionally, it’s said that once you’ve cast a spell, you should see a sign after three days, movement after three weeks and completion after three months. But the key is that you must truly let go of the original longing: the pining for the crush, the desire for your boss or coworkers like you. The purpose of the spell is to instantly give you the feeling of having what you desire. Once you feel it, you must have full faith that all is working itself out in your best interest now, and you no longer need to worry about this situation. With the right attitude, your spell will soar. But if you continue to indulge in longing and worrying, then you’ll suffocate your spell before it has a chance to help you.

Finally, remember that magic cannot violate anyone’s free will, either your target’s or yours. That means that the spell can only create windows of opportunity and manufacture situations to draw your intended desires closer. But magic cannot force you to seize that opportunity. In the end, you’ll still be responsible for swinging at the ball; magic simply insures the perfect pitch.
